Arshad Nadeem clinches gold medal in National Games

KARACHI: Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem, representing the Water and Power Development

Authority (WAPDA), clinched the gold medal in the javelin throw event at the 35th National Games on Monday with a massive throw of 81.1m. His effort proved more than enough to secure top position, as no other athlete managed to cross the 80-metre mark. WAPDA’s Yasir Sultan won silver with a throw of 70.77m, while Pakistan Army’s Abrar took bronze with a 67.68m throw.

Exciting sailing contests were also held in the Arabian Sea, where Pakistan Air Force dominated multiple categories. In the Optimist Class Open category, Air Force’s Muhammad Suleman clinched gold, while his teammate Haider secured silver. In the Optimist Girls event, Pakistan Air Force’s Tahseen Qazi claimed gold. Air Force further strengthened their lead by winning the Optimist Team Event, with Pakistan Navy finishing second.

In the ILCA 4 class, Air Force’s Joshua won gold. In the women’s category, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Umeema Imran secured the top position. Navy’s Abdullah and Muhammad Faisal took gold in the 470 Junior Class, while Navy’s Muhammad Kamran won gold in the RSX event.

In athletics, WAPDA dominated the 100m sprint in both men’s and women’s categories. Sami Ullah clinched gold in the men’s final with a time of 10.30 seconds. Army’s Usman Ali secured silver at 10.40, followed by teammate Rashid Riaz, who claimed bronze in 10.45 seconds.

In the women’s 100m event, WAPDA’s Faiqa Riaz finished first in 11.70 seconds. HEC’s Khoula Umer Khan took silver with 12.03, while Army’s Tameen Khan secured bronze in 12.10 seconds.

In rugby, Army won gold in the men’s event after defeating WAPDA 19–0 in the final at Naya Nazimabad Ground. The women’s rugby title was retained by defending champions WAPDA, who beat Punjab in the final. Sindh secured bronze by taking third place.

In hockey, Punjab, Pakistan Air Force and WAPDA registered commanding victories. In the girls’ category, Punjab routed Balochistan 19–0. Shariqa scored seven goals, including a double hat-trick, Lareeb Abid netted five, Mehak Rashid scored three, while Maliha Younas added two. Saira Younas and Laiba Yasmeen scored one goal each. In the men’s matches, Pakistan Air Force defeated Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 4–3, with Rizwan Ali scoring a hat-trick and Usman Ashraf adding one goal. WAPDA outclassed Sindh 8–0, with Tauseeq Arshad scoring four, Ejaz Ali netting two, and Ali Aziz and Aleem Usman contributing one goal each.

In the men’s football event, Army, Navy and Pakistan Air Force qualified for the semifinals. According to coordinator and FIFA referee Ahmed Rauf, the semifinals will be played on December 10 and the final on December 12.

At KPT Stadium, Navy and Sindh played out a 1–1 draw. Nauman scored for Navy, while Waseem struck the equaliser for Sindh. In the second match, Army edged Police 2–1, with Qadeer and Abrar scoring for the winners. Nasser scored Police’s only goal.

Pakistan Air Force beat Balochistan 1–0 in the third match to secure their semifinal berth. In badminton, the men’s and women’s team event semifinals continued at Sindh Sports Club, Nazimabad.

In the men’s team event, Army and WAPDA booked their places in the final with dominant performances. Army defeated Police 3–0. In the first singles, Raja Hassan beat Masood 21–8, 21–12. Raja Hasnain and Yasir Ali won the doubles 21–6, 21–6 against Zohaib and Tahir. Uzair Khan sealed the tie with a hard-fought 21–18, 19–21, 21–17 win over Zohaib in the second singles.

WAPDA also sealed a 3–0 victory over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Army’s gold tally in National Games shooting event reaches 10 On the third day of the National Games shooting competitions, Army had a clear lead with 10 gold medals, Navy were in second position with 6 gold.

Army are leading with 10 gold, seven silver and two bronze medals, while Navy are in second position with 6 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals. Pakistan Air Force are third with two silver and three bronze medals. Sindh are fourth with two bronze medals. HEC are fifth with two bronze medals.
