Sindh Assembly speaker meets Australian high commissioner

KARACHI: Speaker Sindh Assembly Syed Awais Qadir Shah met the Australian High Commissioner and discussed bilateral cooperation on Thursday.

Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan Timothy Kane called upon Shah at the Sindh Assembly office. The high commissioner arrived in Karachi on Wednesday on a three-day introductory visit to Sindh.

Officials said that Kane was accompanied by Georga Nonnemacher, Second Secretary (Political), and Mateen Amin, Program Officer at the Australian High Commission. During the meeting, Shah was accompanied by Secretary Provincial Assembly of Sindh G M Umar Farooq and Director General Irfan Ahmed Memon.

Detailed discussions were held on bilateral relations, parliamentary cooperation, investment, education, skill development, water management, women’s rights, and future joint projects. Shah said that the relations between Pakistan and Australia are based on mutual trust, respect, and cooperation. Kane said this was his first visit to Sindh and he was delighted to be here. He noted that Australia was interested in increasing investment opportunities in Pakistan. He highlighted that twenty-three thousand Pakistani students were studying in Australia, reflecting the strong ties between the two countries.

The speaker informed the delegation that the Plprovincial assembly had passed several effective laws for women’s rights and empowerment. He also invited the Hhgh commissioner to participate in the 2026 Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference, which the Sindh Assembly would host, and extended an invitation to witness the Assembly session.

The speaker presented the guests with a legacy shield, Ajrak, and Sindhi cap. Kane thanked the assembly for its hospitality. The meeting concluded in a cordial and friendly atmosphere.
