FAISALABAD: President of the Faisalabad Chamber of Small Traders and Industries and Chairman of the Faisalabad Flour Mills Association Ch Shafique Anjum has warned that the current government wheat issuance policy and heavy fines on wheat-carrying transport are likely to create a flour shortage and drive up prices in the market.
He said that the government is supplying wheat at the rate of Rs3,225 per maund, but in limited quantities, causing many flour mills to operate partially, while those that were previously inactive are being denied wheat altogether.
He further stated that transport vehicles delivering flour within the city are facing fines of Rs20,000 to Rs25,000 per vehicle on charges of overloading and reckless driving. As a result, transporters have gone on strike, suspending the supply of flour from mills to the markets.
He urged the government to immediately ensure equal wheat distribution to all mills and exempt wheat and flour delivery vehicles from fines, while allowing smooth 24-hour movement in the city to maintain supply and prevent public hardship.
