WASHINGTON: The United States’ economy could suffer a loss of about $1.1 billion and 23,000 jobs due to the decrease in international student enrolment at US educational institutions, CNBC reported on Sunday, citing estimates of the non-profit organization NAFSA.

The international student enrolment fell by 17 per cent in the fall semester of the academic year 2025, according to the Institute of International Education. The loss is widely attributed to the US President Donald Trump’s administration’s strict student visa policies.

Earlier this year, Trump’s administration revoked over 6,000 student visas due to overstays and law violations. Trump praised the earlier decision of the Supreme Court to revoke 1,400 visas, and called it a “major victory” for the US.

The rate of new international students enrolment at US universities dropped by 17 per cent this autumn compared to previous years, research indicates.

The drop comes as the Trump administration has made it more difficult to obtain student visas, with the research suggesting visa application issues like delays and denials are among the top reasons for the decline in first-time students.
