SUKKUR: Awami Tehreek leaders strongly condemned Section 144 as a “colonial black law” and warned that any move to divide Sindh would result in fierce resistance from the people.
Speaking to a large gathering, Awami Tehreek Central Senior Vice President Noor Ahmed Katiar, General Secretary Advocate Sajid Hussain Mahesar, Legal Advisor Advocate Najeeb-ur-Rehman Mahesar, Sindhi Haari Tehreek President Comrade Ghulam Mustafa Chandio, Qadir Bhutto, Larkana President Ali Hassan Wako, Qambar-Shahdadkot President Imdad Pathan and other leaders announced a women-led rally in Larkana on December 21.
The rally will protest the recent constitutional amendments, corporate farming, the PECA Act and other repressive laws.
The leaders accused the PML-N government, with PPP support, of trampling the Constitution through the 26th and 27th amendments. They said the 27th Amendment has destroyed the justice system and imposed a “constitutional dictatorship”.
They slammed the PPP chairman for talking about democracy while turning Pakistan into a monarchy that has snatched basic rights from 250 million citizens.
They said political activities are being crushed through Section 144, the media is being silenced by PECA, and the Anti-Terrorism Amendment Act allows innocent people to be jailed for six months without trial. The leaders claimed these repressive measures are meant to stop protests against the sale of national resources to foreign companies and corporate farming.
They warned that a proposed 28th Amendment aims to split the country into 12 provinces, weaken local government and cut the provinces’ share in the NFC award.
