HYDERABAD: Workers of the Sindhyani Tehreek and Awami Tehreek along with women, children, and civil society activists marched from City Gate to the Hyderabad Press Club on Sunday in a major demonstration against the 27th Constitutional Amendment, corporate farming, canal projects, plundering of mineral resources, conspiracies to divide Sindh, tribal terrorism, Karo Kari and violence against women.
Participants termed the mobilisation a collective defence of Sindh’s unity, lands, resources and the Indus River, openly defying the restrictions imposed under the Section 144. The march organised jointly by the Sindhyani Tehreek and Awami Tehreek was led by their central leadership. Protesters carried banners and flags passed through the Civil Hospital Road, Tilak Charhi, Hyder Chowk and other key intersections before gathering at the Hyderabad Press Club for a public meeting.
The protesters condemned the attack on the lawyers’ convention in Sukkur, calling it terrorism by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)-backed groups aimed at suppressing opposition to the recent constitutional amendments. The march also rejected corporate farming, demanding that land allotted to companies be reclaimed and returned to farmers. The participants further declared attempts to create new provinces and divide Sindh as unacceptable and anti-national.
The demonstration called for repealing Peca and amendment to the anti-terrorism law that permitted six-month detention without an FIR, terming both measures violations of basic rights.
The Mines and Minerals Amendment Bill 2025 was also rejected by them and termed an assault on the provincial autonomy after the 18th Amendment. The gathering condemned Karo Lari, forced and early-age marriages and other tribal customs, demanding strict legal action and practical measures for women’s protection and equality.
Writers, intellectuals, bar association representatives and civil society members, including Jami Chandio, Advocate Ghafar Narejo, Advocate Israr Chang and Faheem Noonari, joined the march in solidarity.
Meanwhile, the Hyderabad police registered a case at the Cantonment police station against Awami Tehreek’s Vasand Thari, Sindhyani Tehreek chief Umra Samoon and others, including Jami Chandio, Israr Chang, Ghafar Narejo, Mumtaz Babbar and Koonj Lashari, for violating the Section 144.
In the FIR lodged on behalf of the state, the police stated that the Sindh home department had issued an SRO on November 11, 2025, imposing a complete ban on rallies and processions, and the march was conducted in violation of that order.
