Dr Ziauddin Hospital has launched a robotic surgery programme, introducing robotic-assisted technology for advanced minimally invasive procedures in Pakistan’s private healthcare sector.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Dr Asim Hussain, Chairman of Dr Ziauddin Hospital, said the initiative was part of the hospital’s efforts to integrate advanced technology with clinical expertise and patient-centred care.

He said the hospital had a history of introducing advanced medical technologies, including the first CT scan in Karachi, the first superconducting MRI in Pakistan, and the first Cath Lab and Gamma Camera in the private sector.

Dr Hussain said the hospital had prioritised training surgeons and developing the necessary infrastructure before introducing the robotic surgery programme.

Dr Ammad Hussain, Chief Executive of Dr Ziauddin Hospital, said the shift from conventional and laparoscopic procedures to robotic-assisted surgery represented an important development in modern surgical care. He said robotic technology could provide surgeons with greater precision and control.

Dr Haris Rashid, Chair of Surgery at Dr Ziauddin Hospital, said the programme would facilitate minimally invasive procedures in several specialties, including general, cancer, colorectal, urological, gynaecological and cardiac surgery.

Professor Jim S. Khan, Consultant Surgery at the University of Portsmouth, UK, spoke on advances in robotic surgery, while Altug Ergin, Vice President of MicroPort, discussed robotic accuracy and precision in robotic-assisted procedures.

Delivering the closing remarks, Prof. Dr. Abbas Zafar, Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences, Ziauddin University, underscored the significance of the program, saying, “The launch of robotic surgery marks a transformative milestone for Dr Ziauddin Hospital and the healthcare sector of Pakistan. By integrating advanced surgical technology with clinical expertise, we are enhancing precision, improving patient outcomes, and setting new standards in modern healthcare.”

The launch programme of robotic surgery at Dr Ziauddin Hospital represents a major step forward in bringing state-of-the-art, minimally invasive surgical technology to patients in Pakistan and reflects the institution’s continued commitment to excellence, innovation and improved patient outcomes.
