Sindh Governor Muhammad Nehal Hashmi has summoned the budget session of the Sindh Assembly for Wednesday, June 17, 2006, with proceedings scheduled to commence at 2pm.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, who also holds the provincial finance portfolio, will present the provincial budget for the financial year 2026-27 before the House. Ahead of the budget session, a special meeting of the Sindh cabinet has been convened for 11am on Wednesday to approve the budget proposals. The provincial government has already completed all necessary preparations for the formulation and presentation of the budget.
Shah has previously presented the Sindh budget 10 times in the provincial assembly, a record in the province’s parliamentary history. On the opening day of the budget session, only the CM’s budget speech will be delivered, following which the sitting will be adjourned.
On June 18, the CM will address a post-budget press conference to explain the key features of the budget and provide a detailed account of the Sindh government’s achievements during the outgoing financial year.
According to informed parliamentary sources, a five-day general debate on the budget will be held in the Sindh Assembly, with members from both the treasury and opposition benches expected to participate.
Sources said that owing to limited financial resources and fiscal constraints, allocations for development projects are likely to remain restricted in the upcoming budget. A substantial portion of the provincial budget is expected to be consumed by salaries, pensions and other non-development expenditures.
Sources further indicated that water management, climate change, public health and education have been prioritised in the budget framework. The Sindh budget is also expected to propose a 20 per cent increase in the minimum wage, while the provincial government is considering an eight per cent increase in pensions and a 10 per cent rise in salaries for government employees.
