Pakistan appoints new envoy to Iran

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has appointed Imran Ahmed Siddiqui as new Ambassador to Iran, who has left for Tehran to assume his assignment. Siddiqui was additional foreign secretary for Asia-Pacific in the Foreign Office before the appointment.

The new Iran envoy had earlier served in Bangladesh as Pakistan’s high commissioner where he was concurrently accredited to Bhutan and had been holding various assignments in different important capitals erstwhile.

Diplomatic sources told The News/Jang here Sunday that Muhammad Mudassir Tipu, who was ambassador to Iran, has relinquished his charge and returning to Islamabad before assuming his new assignment.

The day Israel and the United States started aggression against Iran on February 28 this year, he was present in capital Tehran. Pakistan’s diplomatic complex in Tehran was also impacted in the attacks since it is situated next to the training centre of Iranian defence forces.

Mudassir Tipu remained in Iran’s capital for 29 months. He has been posted as envoy for Uzbekistan. He will be leaving for Tashkent next month from here to replace Ahmad Farooq, who is a Ravian and served as ambassador in Uzbekistan for three years. He has been asked to report to the Islamabad headquarters. It is likely that he would be assigned a senior slot in the Foreign Office, the sources added.
