KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to widen, rehabilitate and beautify the Malir Halt to Ghaghar Phatak Road, a 30.5-kilometre key corridor serving as one of the main entry routes to Karachi from the N-5 Highway, Thatta and adjoining areas.

The decision was taken in a high-level meeting co-chaired by Sindh Chief Secretary Syed Asif Hyder Shah and Sindh Minister for Works and Services Ali Hassan Zardari, which reviewed the project’s scope, implementation timeline and traffic management plan.

The chief secretary said the Malir Halt–Ghaghar Phatak Road is a strategic gateway for traffic entering Karachi from Thatta and the National Highway, carrying significant commuter and commercial traffic.

He said the corridor requires comprehensive upgradation to improve traffic flow, road safety, and operational efficiency.

He stressed that the design should be people-oriented, facilitating commuters, public transport users, pedestrians and all road users.

Shah directed the Commissioner Karachi, Secretary Works and Services, DIG Traffic Karachi, and Deputy Commissioner Malir to jointly visit the entire stretch and initiate immediate action for removal of encroachments along the 30.5-kilometre corridor to ensure smooth execution of development work and long-term traffic discipline.

He also instructed the DIG Traffic Karachi to prepare and implement an effective traffic management plan during the construction phase, particularly on working days, to minimize inconvenience for citizens and daily commuters.

He emphasized the need for alternative routes, proper diversions, and public awareness measures.

Sindh Minister for Works and Services Ali Hassan Zardari said the government has taken the decision to upgrade and beautify the road as it is one of the main arteries leading into Karachi.

He said the corridor will be developed on

modern lines with improved road geometry, planned U-turns, designated bus stops, and better facilities for safe traffic movement.
