ISLAMABAD: In a major boost for Pakistan cricket and its passionate fan base, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has granted approval for spectators to attend the remaining four matches of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season XI, injecting fresh excitement into the tournament’s decisive phase.
The development was confirmed by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who shared the news via his official account on X (formerly Twitter) following his meeting with Shehbaz Sharif. According to Naqvi, the Prime Minister has allowed full crowd attendance for the high-stakes playoff fixtures, albeit with a key condition aligned with the government’s ongoing austerity measures.
The business end of PSL XI kicks off with a blockbuster Qualifier between table-toppers Peshawar Zalmi and second-placed Islamabad United in Karachi on Tuesday. The action will then shift to Lahore, where Multan Sultans will face Hyderabad Kingsmen in the Eliminator on Wednesday. The second Qualifier and the grand finale are also scheduled to be staged at the iconic Gaddafi Stadium, promising a thrilling conclusion to the tournament.
In his statement, Naqvi said: “Just had a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and I’m pleased to share that we have secured his approval for public attendance in all PSL playoff matches.
“However, this comes with an important condition that fans are strongly encouraged to use public transport or minimize fuel consumption while attending the matches, in line with ongoing national austerity efforts.
“The Prime Minister also conveyed his best wishes to all four teams competing in the playoffs. We look forward to some exciting and entertaining cricket ahead.”
The decision reflects a careful balance between restoring the electrifying stadium atmosphere and adhering to the government’s economic discipline policies. Officials are now working against the clock to ensure smooth logistics for fan attendance. A senior PSL official, when contacted, revealed that arrangements are being explored to facilitate spectators through dedicated transport services.
“We are in a race against time. On one hand, we must ensure seamless ticket availability for fans, and on the other, we are committed to encouraging the use of public transport. Special shuttle services are under consideration to meet both objectives while supporting the government’s austerity drive,” he said.
The official added that efforts are underway to make both Karachi and Lahore venues fully accessible without compromising the Prime Minister’s directive regarding reduced fuel consumption. With the return of crowds, the PSL playoffs are set to regain their signature energy, as thousands of fans prepare to fill the stands and create an electric atmosphere for what promises to be a gripping finale to Season XI.
