MOSCOW: Russia on Friday jailed a former top general to 19 years in prison for embezzlement, the latest prison sentence meted out as part of a purge of the defence ministry´s top brass amid the Ukraine war.

After months of setbacks in its Ukraine offensive, the Kremlin launched an overhaul of the defence ministry´s leadership in mid-2024, resulting in many high-ranking generals and officials being sacked, arrested and jailed.
