KARACHI: Peshawar Zalmi produced a ruthless all-round display to thrash Karachi Kings by a staggering 159 runs in the PSL 2026 clash at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi on Thursday night. The crushing margin turned out to be the biggest defeat recorded in the history of Pakistan Super League, as Zalmi completely outclassed the Kings in all departments of the game.
Chasing a daunting target of 247 runs, Karachi Kings collapsed dramatically and never showed any real resistance. Their batting line-up crumbled from the very start, with wickets tumbling at regular intervals and the pressure mounting with every over.
The disaster began right in the first over when opener Muhammad Waseem returned to the pavilion without troubling the scorers. Iftikhar Ahmed, who had already impressed with the ball against Hyderabad Kings just a day earlier, continued his magical form. Bowling a teasing delivery on a good length at middle stump, Waseem tried to loft it straight but ended up offering a simple catch to Jamal at long-on on the third ball of the innings.
Karachi Kings suffered another massive blow moments later when their biggest hope, captain David Warner, also departed cheaply. Shoriful Islam surprised the Australian batter with a sharply rising delivery on an awkward off-stump line. Warner attempted to advance down the track but was caught in the crease as the ball lifted off the surface, eventually edging it to Farhan Yousuf who completed a comfortable catch. With both openers back in the pavilion within two overs and only four runs on the board, Karachi Kings were already staring at trouble.
The misery continued in the third over when Iftikhar Ahmed struck again, trapping Salman Agha leg-before wicket for just five runs. At that stage, the Kings’ batting order looked completely shaken as Zalmi’s bowlers kept applying relentless pressure.
Amid the collapse, wicketkeeper-batter Azam Khan tried to show some resistance and briefly attempted to counter Zalmi’s bowling attack. He played a few aggressive strokes and managed to score a fighting 25 runs. However, his effort proved to be a lone battle as the rest of the batting line-up failed to stand firm. Apart from Azam Khan, no Karachi Kings batter managed to make a meaningful contribution. In fact, seven batters failed to reach double figures, while both openers were dismissed for ducks. The entire Karachi Kings side was eventually bowled out for just 87 runs in 16.1 overs, completing a dramatic collapse.
For Peshawar Zalmi, the bowlers were outstanding. Iftikhar Ahmed and Naheed Rana were the most destructive, claiming three wickets each while conceding only nine and seven runs respectively. Their disciplined and aggressive bowling dismantled the Kings’ batting order. Left-arm spinner Sufiyan Muqeem also played a key role in the demolition, picking up three wickets for 28 runs and ensuring there was no way back for Karachi Kings. It was a night to remember for Peshawar Zalmi, who delivered a commanding performance with both bat and ball, while Karachi Kings were left to reflect on one of the most crushing defeats in PSL history.
Earlier a blistering batting display from Babar Azam (87*), Kusal Mendis (109) and Abdul Samad (40*) powered Peshawar Zalmi to a towering 246 for 3 — the highest team total in the ongoing PSL 2026.
The foundation of this massive total was laid by captain Babar Azam and Sri Lankan batter Kusal Mendis, who stitched together a magnificent 190-run partnership, the highest stand of the tournament so far. Their composed yet aggressive approach ensured that the scoreboard kept ticking despite brief interruptions.
The second-wicket partnership between Babar and Mendis proved decisive, as the duo dominated the Karachi Kings bowling attack with a blend of elegant stroke play and intelligent rotation of strike. Boundaries flowed regularly while singles and doubles kept the pressure firmly on the fielding side.
Mendis was in sensational form, producing a masterclass in attacking batting. He unleashed strokes to every corner of the ground, leaving the Karachi Kings bowlers searching for answers. No bowler managed to contain him as he dictated terms throughout his stay at the crease.
His superb knock of 109 came off just 71 balls and included 14 boundaries and four towering sixes. The Sri Lankan star was eventually dismissed by Abbas Afridi after Haroon Arshad pulled off a brilliant catch. Babar Azam, meanwhile, continued his impressive run of form after a strong outing against Hyderabad Kingsmen in the previous match. The Zalmi skipper anchored the innings beautifully, scoring an unbeaten 87 off 50 balls, decorated with 10 boundaries and two massive sixes.
In the closing overs, Abdul Samad added the final flourish with a breathtaking cameo. The hard-hitting batter smashed 40 runs off just 10 balls, blasting four huge sixes and three boundaries at a stunning strike rate of 333.33, pushing Zalmi to a mammoth total.
For Karachi Kings, Abbas Afridi was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 2 wickets for 55 runs, but the rest of the attack struggled to contain Zalmi’s relentless batting onslaught.
