LAHORE:Heavy rain accompanied by hail and thunderstorm hit the City here on Tuesday which turned the weather pleasant. After the rainfall, cool winds led to a drop in temperature. Met office predicted similar weather conditions for the next 24 hours.
According to data released by Wasa, the so far highest rain was recorded as 50 mm at Nishtar Town. The data showed that rainfall recorded at various areas included Jail Road 16.5 mm, Airport 11.1 mm, Gulberg 16.6 mm, Laxhmi Chowk 12 mm, Upper Mall 12 mm, Mughalpura 10 mm, Tajpura 8 mm, Chowk Nakhuda 19 mm, Paniwala Talab 6.8 mm, Farrukhabad 2.8 mm, Gulshan-e-Ravi 5.6 mm, Iqbal Town 3 mm, Samanabad 11 mm, Johar Town 32 mm, Hadiyra Drain 12.6 mm, Shadipura 10.2 mm and Saggian 3.8 mm.
The rain was witnessed at Gaddafi Stadium, Kalma Chowk, Muslim Town, Naulakha, Kot Lakhpat, Ferozepur Road, Green Town, Mughalpura, Shahdara, Ichhra, Chauburji, Samanabad, Gulshan-e-Ravi, Johar Town, PIA Road, Pine Avenue, DHA and other adjacent areas.
Following the rain, Wasa MD Ghufran Ahmed came out in the field and supervised the rainwater clearing operations at various city localities. He visited Usman Block Disposal Station and Garden Town Water Tank and inspected drainage operation.
He directed that machinery and staff should be active on all highways. He further issued special instructions to keep all underpasses across the city clear and presence of field staff should be ensured at all points so that water does not stagnate at any place. Meanwhile, Minister for Housing and Urban Development Bilal Yasin directed Wasa DG to keep field teams operational.
He said all disposal stations should be ready and machinery should be fully functional and monitoring should be ensured in all districts. Bilal Yasin said timely drainage of water from low-lying areas and underpasses should be given top priority while contingent plan should be prepared keeping in mind the recommendations of the district administration and PDMA. Furthermore, the alert issued by the NDMA stated that there will be thundershowers across the country including Punjab from March 31 to April 5.
