LAHORE : Water & Power Development Authority (WAPDA) observed Earth Hour by switching off lights on the iconic Wapda House on Saturday night for an hour from 8.30pm to 9.30pm in solidarity with the global call for environmental stewardship.
Earth Hour is more than a symbolic hour of darkness. Wapda views this occasion as a reminder that water and energy security must go hand in hand with ecological responsibility.
Wapda’s hydropower portfolio — already contributing 9,500 MW of clean electricity to the National Grid — is expanding through projects such as Diamer Bhasha Dam, Mohmand Dam, Dasu Hydropower Project and Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project.
These projects are designed not only to meet Pakistan’s growing needs for water and power, but also to displace thermal generation, cut emissions, and strengthen resilience against climate shocks. With addition of 9.7 MAF of water storage and 10,000 MW of green power by 2030, reflects a firm commitment to low-carbon development.
Wapda will continue to build the infrastructure that enables such a future, but lasting change requires the participation of every citizen. Meanwhile, the National Grid Company (NGC), formerly NTDC, urged the public to participate actively in Earth Hour. NGC observed Earth Hour across all its facilities nationwide from 8.30 to 9.30pm on Saturday night.
