Pakistan’s former football team captain beomes minister in Bangladesh

ISLAMABAD: Former captain of Pakistan’s football team retired Major of Pakistan Army Hafizuddian Ahmad has become Minister for Liberation War Affairs.

He was elected from the Bhola constituency for sixth time. A stonch opponent of defunct Awamiu League and central leader of the ruling BNP, Hafizuddin Ahmad became minister for third time.

He took the oath of office Tuesday along with his Prime Minister Tarique Rehman.

He migrated to Bangladesh before its creation. Maj Hafizuddin was also Captain of the Pakistan National football team for three years from 1968. He was an outstanding sportsman and in recognition of his contribution to the sport, he was awarded the FIFA Order of Merit, the highest honour awarded by FIFA, in 2004.

He was room-mate of former Federal Secretary Syed Anwer Mahmood in Dhaka University and some of his colleagues in Pakistan Army were retired as Lt. General long ago.

He had meeting with his former collegaues when he came to Pakistan in December 2024 on a private visit. He was presented a memorial shshield by Lt Gen rtd Khateer Hussain.

Retired officers of the 16th PMA War Course hosted feasts for him in Lahore and Islamabad. Hafizuddin was the Battalion Senior Under Officer of the course and received a very warm welcome from his Pakistani course mates.
