ISLAMABAD: Tarique Rehman, who is likely to be the prime minister of Bangladesh in wake of Thursday polls, was born in Lahore Combined Military Hospital (CMH) on November 20, 1965, he revealed it to Pakistan’s National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq in Dhaka.
Ayaz Sadiq had went to Dhaka to attend the funeral of former prime minister Bangladesh Khalida Zia, who passed away on December 30 2025. She was mother of Tarique, the chief of Bangladesh National Party (BNP).
Saeed Maitla Secretary National Assembly Pakistan, who accompanied the Speaker in Dhaka sojourn told The News/Jang other day that Tarique Rehman, despite he was in mourning at that point in time, recalled his memories about Pakistan very fondly.
He was of the view that Pakistan and Bangladesh have buried their sour memories, and the two countries could establish brotherly ties.
Interestingly, in 1971 war with India, the late Ziaur Rehman, formerly a PMA Kakul cadet, was in then East Pakistan when he switched his loyalty. The late Begum Khalida Zia and her family stayed in Gujranwala and garrison commander provided not only protection to her but also looked after the family very well.
The sources said Begum Khalida Zia traveled to Dhaka under special arrangements made by the Pakistan Army in end of December 1971.
