ISLAMABAD: A Sikh family from Mehna village in Indian Punjab Moga district has set an example of community harmony by donating land to construct road for a graveyard in the village.
There was no way to reach the village graveyard for the past nearly seven decades. In the absence of a road, the Muslim families of the village faced difficulties in burying their deceased family members.
A western media report suggests that the Muslim community had to wade through standing crops and standing water in the fields to take the dead to the graveyard. The permission of the land owners had to be taken before passing through the fields.
The Sikh family, village sarpanch and panchayat have been honoured by the Muslim community for the commendable step.
According to village sarpanch (elder) Amandeep Singh Bhima, he will soon complete all the paperwork related to donate the land to the graveyard and start the construction work of the road.
The land adjacent to the graveyard was owned by Jagdish Singh and his nephews Shamsher Singh and Rajwinder Singh. This Sikh family cultivates this land. Gurwinder Singh Gill, son of Jagdish Singh, said: “We have donated all the land required for the path to the graveyard and we don’t want money or land in exchange for land”.
