KARACHI: K-Electric (KE) has agreed to provide a dedicated power connection to Mega Motor Company, BYD’s local partner in Pakistan, as the Chinese automaker prepares to launch its new energy vehicle manufacturing operations in the country.
The utility has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Mega Motor Company for a 5-megawatt power supply, scalable to 7.5 megawatts, to support the facility, which is expected to become operational in 2026. Under the agreement, the automaker will develop and finance the dedicated power infrastructure, with K-Electric facilitating the supply. The arrangement is intended to ensure a reliable and flexible energy source for BYD-MMC’s automated manufacturing operations as production ramps up, aligning with the company’s global operational standards.
Moonis Alvi, chief executive officer of K-Electric, said the agreement reflects growing confidence among international manufacturers in the utility’s ability to support high-demand industrial operations. He added that scalable power solutions were central to supporting industrial growth while advancing Pakistan’s clean energy objectives.
Aly Khan, chief executive officer of BYD Pakistan-Mega Motor Company, said the partnership was critical for operating at global standards and expanding production as the company brings new energy vehicle technology to Pakistan. He said such collaborations could encourage further greenfield investment and support the country’s longer-term economic goals.
The memorandum sets the groundwork for a longer-term partnership focused on clean energy adoption and the development of sustainable mobility in Pakistan.
