ISLAMABAD: Fish consumption in Pakistan remains limited across most regions, with Sindh emerging as the only province where fish is regularly consumed, according to new findings based on the Household Integrated Economic Survey (HIES) 2024-25. The survey data shows that, on average, fish is rarely purchased by Pakistani households.

Sindh stands out as a clear exception, where 39 percent of households reported buying fish at least once every two weeks. In contrast, all the other provinces and regions recorded significantly lower consumption rates. The findings indicate that fish is not a regular part of the diet for the majority of Pakistanis. Even on a bi-weekly basis, most households across the country do not purchase fish, underscoring its marginal role in national dietary patterns.

Experts attribute Sindh’s higher consumption levels to geographical and cultural factors, including its proximity to the sea and long-standing culinary traditions linked to coastal living. Outside Sindh, however, fish remains an infrequent food choice rather than a staple.
