There seems to be a new scandal in the power sector almost every day. The alleged corruption in Lesco’s smart meter project has added to the frustration of electricity consumers across the country. These meters were introduced with claims of transparency and fairness, yet now their procurement is under serious question. For ordinary citizens, this feels like another reform that benefits a few while hurting the many. Electricity bills are already unaffordable for middle- and lower-income households. When funds are allegedly mishandled, it is the people that eventually pay through higher tariffs.
The authorities must understand that patience is running out. Investigations should not be symbolic. Findings must be made public and those responsible held accountable. If such large sums can be misused without consequence, how can consumers trust future reforms? Honest governance is the only way to restore confidence in the power sector.
