With the passage of time, water availability across various regions of the country has been severely affected due to unchecked human activities and environmental neglect. Namal Lake stands out as one of the most prominent and alarming examples of this environmental degradation. Once known for its abundant water, rich aquatic life, diverse bird species, lush vegetation and tourist attractions, the lake has now lost its natural charm. The water level has dropped drastically and several bird species have disappeared from the area.
The depletion of the lake has also caused a sharp decline in groundwater levels, creating serious challenges for the residents of Namal Valley. The local community, already economically strained, is not in a position to rehabilitate the lake without government support. Environmental experts and local residents have urged the provincial and federal governments to take immediate steps to restore Namal Lake. If developed as a tourist destination, the area could not only regain its ecological balance but also generate revenue and improve the socio-economic conditions of the local population. Restoring Namal Lake to its former glory has become the need of the hour.
