ISLAMABAD: Bangladesh has protested India over facilitating its ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina to issue provocative statements for encouraging terrorism in Bangladesh. Bangladesh has also formally sought the immediate extradition of Sheikh Hasina and her former minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on the occasion.
The two have been sentenced death by the court for their crimes against humanity. Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry summoned Indian high commissioner on Sunday and conveyed its protest. According to reports Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma was summoned to convey deep concern of Bangladesh over allowing former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to make what it described as “provocative statements calling on leaders and activists to engage in terrorist activities” in Bangladesh.
The Foreign Ministry says the high commissioner visited the ministry in the morning, where Bangladesh conveyed its deep concern to the Indian government over Sheikh Hasina—currently in India—being allowed to continue making such statements.
The ministry further drew the envoy’s attention to what it said “anti-Bangladesh activities” by Awami League members residing in India aimed at disrupting the upcoming national elections, urging New Delhi to stop such activities and extradite those involved.
Bangladesh also sought India’s cooperation to prevent suspects involved in the recent attempt on the life of Bangladesh Inquilab Manch spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, and requested their immediate arrest and extradition should they enter Indian territory. The government expressed the hope that India, as a neighbouring country, would stand by the people of Bangladesh in upholding justice and safeguarding the democratic process.
India later in the day categorically rejected the assertions made by Bangladesh, noting that India has never allowed its territory to be used for activities inimical to the interests of the friendly people of Bangladesh.
