LAHORE:Punjab Minister for Energy Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar has said the Waste-to-Energy projectis a major breakthrough in Punjab’s energy ecosystem.

He was speaking at a meeting to review progress on the 50MW Waste-to-Energy (WtE) Project.The session featured a comprehensive briefing by Managing Director, Punjab Power Development Board (PPDB) Saniya Awais, who presented the project’s preparation status, technical aspects and upcoming milestones. The meeting was attended by Secretary Energy Dr Farrukh Naveed, Additional Secretary Majid Iqbal, and senior officers from relevant departments.

During the briefing, PPDB MDinformed the forum that the Waste-to-Energy project is based on advanced global technologies designed to convert municipal solid waste into electricity through scientific and environmentally responsible processes. With more than 2,800 Waste-to-Energy plants operating worldwide, the Lahore project will become Pakistan’s first large-scale WtE model, setting a benchmark for modern waste management and clean energy production.

She apprised the minister that PPDB has completed necessary preparatory work under the Punjab Power Generation Policy 2009, while the LWMC formally committed to supplying 3,000 tonnes of mixed municipal waste per day. The Sundar Industrial Estate has been nominated as the official power purchaser for the project.

According to the briefing, the proposed power plant will be established near Lakhodair / 33KM Multan Road and will be developed with over USD 175 million in private sector investment under a 25-year concession period. Under this framework, the Punjab Industrial Estates Development and Management Company (PIEDMC) will serve as the power off-taker, LWMC will provide fuel supply, while the Punjab Grid Company will deliver transmission services. It was further informed that pre-qualification of both local and international investors has been completed, and bids will be invited from prequalified sponsors following the approval of the project’s security package.
