The Hyderabad airport is set to be revived after 13 years and developed as an alternate airport for Karachi, Sukkur and Nawabshah in case of emergencies or adverse weather conditions, according to sources in the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA).

Work on the project is expected to begin soon. Under the proposed upgrade, the airport’s runway will be extended from 7,000 feet to 11,500 feet to enable Boeing 777 aircraft to land.

The runway upgrade will also include improved passenger facilities for flights using the airport, the sources said. The decision to upgrade the airport could also facilitate the possible launch of domestic flights, with Hyderabad potentially serving as a regional hub.

In the event of an emergency, flights originally bound for Karachi, Nawabshah or Sukkur could be diverted to Hyderabad. Passengers could then be transported by road to Karachi and other destinations, allowing for their onward travel.

Stakeholders are also likely to be consulted regarding the possibility of launching regional flights from Hyderabad airport, the sources said. The last commercial flight from Hyderabad airport was operated by Pakistan International Airlines in 2013.
