Sindh Senior Minister and Information, Transport and Mass Transit Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has said the activation of Treatment Plant-I (TP-I) under the Greater Karachi Sewerage Plan (S-III) is an important step towards improving the city’s sewerage system.
In a statement issued on Saturday, he said the Sindh government planned to increase TP-I’s treatment capacity from 51 million gallons per day (mgd) to 100mgd.
He said the government had allocated Rs5 billion for secondary-level treatment to facilitate the immediate activation of the plant. The project, he added, was aimed not only at treating sewage but also at protecting Karachi’s environment and public health.
Memon said the S-III project included approximately 56 kilometres of Lyari and Malir trunk sewers through which sewage would be conveyed to treatment plants.
He said treated water could also be reused for industrial purposes, helping reduce pressure on freshwater resources. A sustainable solution to Karachi’s sewerage problems, he added, required modern treatment facilities, an effective trunk sewer network and reuse of treated water.
The minister said the Sindh government would continue taking practical measures to improve basic civic facilities for Karachi’s residents.
