Nine suspects were arrested and four .30-bore pistols recovered following an alleged armed attack on police personnel and vandalism at the Saima Police Post in Karachi’s Awami Colony area, police said on Friday.
The incident occurred in Band Wali Patti during the night when police personnel deployed at the post were conducting snap checking. Police said they signalled two suspicious motorcyclists to stop, but the men allegedly sped away.
According to police, the suspects, identified as Shoaib and Gul Zaman, both sons of Ali Murad, later returned with around 60 to 70 accomplices and allegedly attacked the police post. The attackers assaulted police personnel and opened fire, injuring officers Aamir Ali and Ateeq Kalwar. They also allegedly vandalised the post and damaged government property before fleeing.
The DIG East Zone took notice of the incident and directed police to arrest those involved. Police subsequently conducted raids in different areas and arrested nine suspects: Gul Zaman, Shoaib, Zahid, Khalid and Shahid, all sons of Ali Murad; Waheed Ali, son of Ghulam Hussain; Ali Murad, son of Beero; Bahir Shah, son of Hakim Shah; and Nizam, son of Gul Hassan. Four .30-bore pistols were also recovered from the arrested suspects, police said.
Five cases were registered at Awami Colony Police Station. An FIR was registered under various sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, including Sections 147, 148, 149, 353, 324, 186 and 427, as well as Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act. Four separate cases (FIR Nos. 732/2026 to 735/2026) were registered under Section 23(i)(A) of the Sindh Arms Act over the weapons recoveries. Police said further investigation was underway to determine the individual roles of the suspects and identify others allegedly involved in the attack.
In video statements recorded after the incident, injured police personnel alleged that the attackers assaulted officers and opened fire, while police officials arriving to assist them were also attacked. They also alleged that the attackers vandalised the post and damaged government property.
