KARACHI: Oil marketing companies (OMCs) recorded total sales of around 1.3 million tonnes in September 2026, down 2.0 per cent year-on-year (YoY) but up 7.0 per cent month-on-month (MoM), according to oil sales data released on Friday.
The increase in monthly volumes lifted OMC sales during the first quarter of FY27 to 4.1 million tonnes, representing a 6.0 per cent YoY increase, largely supported by a sharp rise in furnace oil (FO) demand amid changes in the country’s power generation mix.
Excluding furnace oil, OMC sales stood at 1.25 million tonnes in September, down 8.0 per cent YoY but up 8.0 per cent MoM. Ex-FO sales during 1QFY27 remained broadly unchanged from the same period last year at around 3.8 million tonnes.
Furnace oil sales increased nearly sevenfold YoY to 93,000 tonnes in September, primarily due to LNG shortages that led to greater reliance on FO for power generation. However, FO volumes declined 5.0 per cent MoM, which the report attributed to lower power demand.
Meanwhile, demand for other petroleum products remained under pressure as fuel prices increased sharply. Average motor spirit (petrol) prices rose 42 per cent YoY to Rs375 per litre, while high-speed diesel (HSD) prices increased 48 per cent to Rs401 per litre.
Petrol sales fell 5.0 per cent YoY and 2.0 per cent MoM to 652,000 tonnes. HSD volumes declined 11 per cent YoY but rose 25 per cent MoM to 525,000 tonnes, with the monthly increase attributed mainly to seasonal factors.
Among the listed OMCs, Pakistan State Oil (PSO) recorded the strongest increase in sales in September. Its sales rose 12 per cent YoY and 12 per cent MoM to 639,000 tonnes, raising its market share by 230 basis points to 47.51 per cent.
The increase was driven particularly by HSD sales, with PSO selling 269,000 tonnes of HSD in September, compared with 199,000 tonnes in August.Attock Petroleum Limited (APL) recorded sales of 116,000 tonnes, unchanged YoY but down 4.0 per cent
MoM, while its market share declined by 99 basis points to 8.62 per cent.Wafi Energy (WAFI) posted sales of 110,000 tonnes, down 6.0 per cent YoY but up 2.0 per cent MoM. Hascol Petroleum recorded sales of 37,000 tonnes, down 14 per cent YoY but up 5.0 per cent MoM.
