The demand for previous work experience even for entry-level positions is a common problem faced by fresh graduates in Pakistan. Every year, thousands of young people complete their university degrees and enter the job market with hopes of beginning their professional careers. However, many soon face a frustrating situation. Job advertisements for positions described as ‘entry-level’ often require one, two or even more years of experience. This leaves fresh graduates wondering how they are supposed to gain experience when employers are unwilling to give them their first opportunity.

A university graduate may have completed assignments, projects, presentations, internships and practical coursework, but these experiences are sometimes not considered sufficient by employers. As a result, talented young people can spend months applying for jobs without receiving a meaningful opportunity to demonstrate their abilities. Employers certainly have the right to look for skilled and capable workers. However, entry-level positions should also provide reasonable opportunities for candidates who are beginning their professional journey. I hope employers and relevant authorities will recognise this issue and take practical steps to make the transition from education to employment fairer for young graduates.
