A 12-year-old boy died on Sunday during treatment at a hospital after allegedly being shot in the face accidentally while sitting inside a parked car in a residential apartment complex near Bait-ul-Mukarram Masjid in Block 16 of Gulshan-e-Iqbal.
The injured boy was immediately taken to a private hospital on Stadium Road, where he succumbed to his injuries after remaining in critical condition for several hours. The deceased was identified as Abdul Raqeeb, son of Mohsin. He was a resident of Block L of the apartment complex. He was in the sixth grade at school, and the youngest of four siblings.
According to the Aziz Bhatti police, the incident took place inside an electric car. Officials said the vehicle belonged to Burhan, a car showroom owner residing in Block H of the apartment complex.
He said Burhan’s licensed pistol was inside the car, in which his son Ahmed and Ahmed’s three friends were sitting. All four boys were reportedly residents of the same apartment complex and of a similar age.
Allegedly, the pistol went off accidentally in Ahmed’s hand and Raqeeb got shot in the face. The relevant DSP said police have seized the pistol and its licence, while the footage recorded by the CCTV cameras installed in the apartment complex are also being obtained to clarify the facts.
Police have recorded the statement of the boy who had allegedly fired the shot, and examined his birth certificate and other documents to establish his age. Officials will also ascertain if the weapon was routinely kept inside the vehicle, and who had possession of the car keys.
