Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab on Wednesday said citizens should have direct access to information on the city’s administrative affairs, development projects, assets, land and financial matters.
“Transparency is our top priority. If the residents of Karachi unite around one vision and one objective, no power can stop them from moving forward on the path of development.” Wahab said information that was previously restricted to limited circles is now being made publicly available through the website and modern technology so that not only Karachi’s residents but the entire world can also remain informed about the city’s administrative and development affairs.
“Our objective is to ensure that whenever anyone wants to know what is happening in Karachi, they should not have to depend on any officer or file,” he said while speaking at a press conference at the headquarters of the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation.
Instead, he added, all the relevant information should be available online, so new sections have been introduced on the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s (KMC) website (kmc.gos.pk) to promote transparency and facilitate access to information.
These include details of the KMC’s assets and properties, records of development projects, the Karachi Development Map (KDM), the Land Record Management System and other important information, he explained.
He said citizens should be able to know which land and properties belong to the KMC, what development work is under way in Karachi, the cost of each project, which institution or contractor is executing the work and under which funding source the project is being completed.
