This letter refers to the news report ‘Senate panel told: Ex-rulers of former princely states receive over Rs40m annually’ (Sept 3, 2026). The Senate Standing Committee on Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit-Baltistan and States and Frontier Regions was informed earlier this week that the government provides an annual maintenance allowance of Rs40.93 million to former rulers, their successors and dependents of acceding states.
One wishes that such concern would extend to the people at large, especially senior and retired individuals who only get a meagre pension.
