Long and short speeches reverberated in the Sindh Assembly last week as speakers called the province their motherland and vowed to resist its vivisection. But what have they done for Sindh? Visiting the constituency of these provincial assembly members, one can only observe disregard. Divided institutions, unkempt infrastructure and pauperised citizens. Much of the population consumes unclean water and there are many out-of-school children.
A once prosperous province has been reduced to a place where broken roads overflow with sewerage water and where canal water is seemingly never allowed to flow downstream to where small farmers and peasants live, forcing them to either migrate or live hand-to-mouth.
