KARACHI: The Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Pakistan (ICMA) has unveiled its Accountability Report 2026, assessing Pakistan’s progress on key public priorities, including employment, inflation, political stability and climate resilience.

The report says the economy grew 3.7 per cent in FY2026, up from 3.18 per cent a year earlier, while the fiscal deficit narrowed to 0.7 per cent of GDP from 2.6 per cent. Workers’ remittances increased by 8.2 per cent, while the current account recorded a $72 million surplus. The exchange rate stood at Rs281.1 per US dollar.

The report also highlights measures focused on youth and digital transformation, including Rs21 billion allocated for youth business and agriculture loans, the launch of the Digital Youth Hub and the National AI Advancement Initiative, which includes seven AI hubs and programmes such as AI Seekho 2026.

Climate resilience also featured prominently, with Rs690 billion allocated for FY2026-27, including Rs214 billion in direct spending and Rs476 billion in green subsidies, according to the report.

Pakistan expanded economic cooperation with other countries, with $1.22 billion in business-to-business agreements signed at the Pakistan-China Business Conference, accelerated talks on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with the UAE, and increased cooperation with Central Asian states and the US.

ICMA Vice President Muhammad Yasin said Pakistan’s future progress will depend on investment in human capital, stronger institutions and climate resilience.“Accountability means converting frameworks into measurable outcomes for citizens,” he said.
