A man was killed and his nephew injured when unidentified armed men riding a motorcycle opened fire on them near the Super Highway bus terminal on Wednesday.
According to the police, the incident occurred on a service road near the Sohrab Goth bus terminal within the jurisdiction of the Sohrab Goth police station. The victims had travelled to Karachi from Garhi Yasin, Sindh, to appear in a court case.
The injured men were being taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital when one of them succumbed to his wounds. The deceased was identified as 50-year-old Didar, son of Ail Khan, while the injured man was identified as 45-year-old Dildar, son of Mithal.
The police said the victims were uncle and nephew. They had hired a vehicle for Rs30,000 at around 2am and left Garhi Yasin for Karachi. They reached Karachi at around 7am and appeared before the City Court. After the court proceedings, they left at around 12:30pm.
According to the police, the men were heading towards a petrol station near the Super Highway bus terminal when two armed motorcycle riders intercepted their vehicle. As the occupants got out of the vehicle and attempted to flee, the attackers opened fire and escaped.
The police also recorded the statement of the vehicle driver, Ali alias Dilshad. According to his statement, the attackers and the victims appeared to know each other, as they addressed one another by name during the incident.
The police said the initial investigation suggested that the shooting might have stemmed from a personal enmity. Evidence was collected from the crime scene, and further investigation was under way.
