PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council on Wednesday announced a province-wide strike today against persistent inflation and continuous increases in petroleum prices and levies, while condemning the alleged violence against lawyers in Abbottabad and demanding an inquiry into the incident.
According to a statement issued here, the council expressed concern over the continuous rise in prices of daily-use commodities, increases in petroleum products and various levies that have placed an additional financial burden on the public, as well as the deteriorating law and order situation in the province.
It also condemned the unpleasant incident, scuffles and stone-pelting that allegedly occurred between officials of the assistant commissioner and deputy commissioner of Abbottabad and lawyers, resulting in reports that several members of the legal fraternity were injured.
The council announced a complete strike across the province on Thursday against inflation, increases in petroleum products and levies, worsening security conditions and the hardships faced by the public. Lawyers will boycott court proceedings during the strike.
The council leaders said it was the government’s responsibility to provide relief to the people, control artificial inflation and prevent the continuous increase in financial burdens imposed through petroleum prices, levies and other taxes.They expressed concern over rising insecurity, terrorism and the deteriorating law and order situation, urging the government to ensure protection for citizens and lawyers.
