PESHAWAR: Women can use the Right to Information (RTI) law to raise their voices for transparency and accountability in government institutions and ensure equitable access to public resources and employment opportunities, a workshop was told on Wednesday.
Speaking at a capacity-building workshop titled “Strengthening Women’s Voices: Rights, Accountability, and Participation in Decision-Making,” Syed Saadat Jehan, Deputy Director Communication, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Commission (KPIC), said access to information and records held by public bodies enabled women to monitor government policies and services and hold public institutions accountable.
The workshop was jointly organised by Transparency International-Pakistan and Safar Welfare Organization at Government Girls Degree College, Jamrud, Khyber district.Saadat Jehan said women could use the RTI law to obtain vital information about government schemes and programmes and ensure their fair share of public resources. Access to authentic and timely information, he added, could help women better understand government policies and promote transparency in public affairs.
Addressing the students, he said they could also use RTI to promote merit and transparency in matters relating to scholarships, admissions and other opportunities in educational institutions.Students, faculty members, representatives of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Commission on the Status of Women and members of civil society organisations attended the workshop.
