Islamabad:Former Inspector General of Islamabad Police and Grade-20 Police Service of Pakistan officer Qazi Jamilur Rehman has been awarded a PhD degree by the National Defence University (NDU), following the successful public defense of his thesis on de-radicalisation mechanisms in Pakistan.
Supervised by Assistant Professor Dr. Irfan Mehsud, the public defense took place under the supervision of Dr. Maria Effendi, Head of the Department of Peace and Contemporary Studies at the NDU.
Jamil’s research presented an indigenous de-radicalisation model tailored to Pakistan’s socio-cultural environment, informed by a comparative analysis of domestic and international initiatives launched in the post-9/11 era.
Focusing on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa prison system, the study identified key similarities between standard correctional facilities and existing de-radicalisation centers, such as those established in Swat following 2009 counterterrorism operations. The findings highlight significant potential for transforming local prisons into institutionalized rehabilitation centers through targeted structural reforms.
