PESHAWAR: Police on Tuesday identified the two attackers who were killed during an alleged encounter in the limits of Shahpur Police Station the previous day.
A police team transporting notorious gangster Mumtaz alias Mumtazay was allegedly attacked by around eight to 10 assailants on Northern Bypass, police said. Mumtaz, who was wanted in more than 40 criminal cases, was described by police as the ringleader of an organised land-grabbing and criminal gang.
He was wanted in cases involving robbery, murder, attempted murder, attacks on police, terrorism, illegal display of weapons, drug peddling and other serious offences.According to police, the attackers opened fire and used hand grenades against the police team. Mumtaz sustained a bullet wound during the exchange of fire and died. Police said two attackers were killed as well during the exchange of fire, while the remaining assailants escaped.
The slain attackers were identified as Syed Nawab, a resident of Sakhakot, and Ali Khan, a resident of Dargai.Two SHOs were injured in the attack and were shifted to hospital, where they are receiving treatment.Police said all available resources were being utilised to identify and arrest those involved in the attack and bring them to justice.
