CHITRAL: A seminar and awareness walk were organised in Lower Chitral to highlight the importance and benefits of breastfeeding for mothers and infants.
Organized under the Nutrition Programme of the Health Department in collaboration with UNICEF, the event was led by District Health Officer (DHO) Lower Chitral, Dr Shamim. Health officials, nutrition programme representatives, healthcare workers and other stakeholders participated in the seminar and awareness activities.
Addressing the seminar, LHW Coordinator Dr Irshad said the main objective of World Breastfeeding Month in August was to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and discourage the unnecessary use of formula and bottled milk for infants.
He highlighted three key recommendations for the healthy growth and development of children.He said babies should be breastfed within one hour of birth so they receive the mother’s first milk, known as colostrum, which is rich in essential nutrients and protective factors.
He further said infants should be given only breast milk for the first six months, without even water, unless otherwise medically advised.After six months, he said, breastfeeding should continue until the child reaches two years of age or beyond, along with appropriate complementary foods.
GBMF focal person Muhammad Farid and representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO) also participated in the event.The participants emphasised the need to increase awareness among mothers and families about the health benefits of breastfeeding and the importance of following recommended infant-feeding practices to ensure better maternal and child health.
