LANDIKOTAL: Poor traffic management and roadside encroachments have turned Landikotal Bazaar into a congested and chaotic commercial centre, causing serious difficulties for pedestrians, shopkeepers and motorists.
Residents and traders told reporters on Wednesday that almost all major roads and streets in the bazaar had been encroached upon by pushcart vendors, makeshift stalls and taxis parked in long queues.
They said the congestion had become particularly dangerous during emergencies, as ambulances, fire engines and other emergency vehicles could face difficulties reaching their destinations.
Pedestrians were also reportedly being forced to walk on busy roads because footpaths and roadside spaces had been occupied by pushcarts, taxis and other vehicles, increasing the risk of accidents.
Shopkeepers and private office owners alleged that a daily “collection system” was operating in the bazaar. They claimed that whenever a traffic official was posted as in-charge of the bazaar, vendors and taxi drivers were allegedly subjected to daily collections, with a portion purportedly being shared with officials.
The traders called for a transparent investigation into the allegations and strict action against any official found involved in illegal activities.
They also alleged that personnel of the Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) were collecting daily fees from shopkeepers but had failed to control encroachments and maintain sanitation in the bazaar.
According to traders, municipal officials appeared to be turning a blind eye to roadside encroachments, while garbage and filth had accumulated at several locations.
Local traders urged the government, particularly the Khyber district police officer, to deploy honest and competent traffic personnel to Landikotal Bazaar and introduce an effective traffic management system.
