PESHAWAR: A meeting of the Pakistan Journalists Safety Coalition (PJSC) KP chapter has decided to continue advocacy for a legal framework to protect journalists in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to a statement, the meeting, chaired by chapter chairperson Saiful Islam Safi, was held at the Peshawar Press Club to discuss a recent meeting with Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi, who had committed to taking the demand for legislation to combat impunity for crimes against journalists to the provincial assembly.
The participants said the provincial government should take the safety of journalists and the issue of impunity seriously and take concrete steps to bring perpetrators of crimes to justice.They included Peshawar Press Club President M. Riaz, Khyber Union of Journalists President Kashifuddin, Freedom Network Executive Director Iqbal Khattak, senior journalist Shamim Shahid, Farzana Ali, Parliamentary Reporters Association Secretary Asghar Ali and Faridullah Khan.
Iqbal Khattak told the meeting that the PJSC federal chapter, under the leadership of Hamid Mir, had written a letter to the KP chief minister, urging him to take up the issue of impunity for crimes against journalists.
