Islamabad:COMSATS University (CUI) hosted an international workshop titled “Dissemination of SRM Research Findings and Sensitization of Policymakers in Pakistan”. The workshop brought together policymakers, government officials, researchers, academics, international partners, and young researchers to promote informed dialogue on Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) and its implications for Pakistan and the wider Global South.
Pakistan is highly vulnerable to climate change, facing increasing risks from extreme temperatures, floods, droughts, changing rainfall patterns, water stress, and impacts on agriculture, public health, ecosystems, and livelihoods. In this context, strengthening national research capacity and evidence-based understanding of emerging climate responses is increasingly important. The workshop provided a platform to examine SRM within the broader climate response landscape, while considering its scientific uncertainties, potential risks, governance, ethical, and policy implications.
Organized by the Department of Meteorology, COMSATS University, in collaboration with The Degrees Initiative, United Kingdom, the workshop aimed to strengthen scientific capacity, research collaboration, and science–policy engagement on emerging climate intervention technologies.
The event was graced by Prof. Dr. Raheel Qamar, T.I., Rector, COMSATS University Islamabad, who highlighted the University's commitment to scientific excellence, interdisciplinary research, international collaboration, and evidence-informed policymaking. He emphasized the importance of strengthening Pakistan's research capacity and ensuring that the perspectives of Pakistan and the Global South are meaningfully represented in international climate research and governance discussions.
