From floods to record-high temperatures, climate change has emerged as one of the most pressing challenges to Pakistan in recent years. However, the action being taken against it does not address the root of the problem, which is that the country is suffering the consequences of the exorbitant carbon emissions of other nations. Pakistan contributes to less than one per cent of total global emissions. In addition to curbing our own emissions, the current situation requires encouraging other countries to decrease theirs as well.
Diplomatic leverage must be used to participate in global environmental dialogue and negotiate international climate agreements, urging signatories and international bodies to take measured steps towards a cleaner atmosphere. Climate action must be expanded beyond borders to be effective as disaster does not discriminate.
