ISLAMABAD: Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Sunday that democracy, constitutional supremacy, rule of law and strong parliamentary institutions are essential for national unity, political stability, sustainable uplift and prosperity.
He maintained that the first session of the Constituent Assembly on August 10, 1947, marked the beginning of Pakistan’s parliamentary journey and was a historic expression of the democratic aspirations of the nation’s founding leadership.
The Senate chairman said Parliament is the true forum for representing the aspirations of the people through legislation, dialogue and democratic debate.
He highlighted the Senate’s vital role in strengthening the federation by ensuring equal representation of the federating units and promoting national cohesion.
Gilani called upon all political forces to uphold parliamentary traditions of tolerance, mutual respect, dialogue and consensus in the larger national interest.
He reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to strengthening democracy, constitutional governance and effective parliamentary institutions.
He stressed the importance of engaging youth with Pakistan’s democratic and constitutional journey and embracing modern technology to make Parliament more accessible and responsive.
“A strong Parliament is the foundation of a strong federation and a stable, prosperous Pakistan. Our collective responsibility is to protect and strengthen our democratic legacy for future generations,” he said.
A day earlier, the Senate chairman, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and Deputy Speaker Syed Ghulam Mustafa agreed to increase institutional cooperation and coordination for the stability of the parliamentary democratic system in the country.
The agreement was expressed during the Senate chairman’s meeting with the NA speaker and deputy speaker at his residence.
