LANDIKOTAL: Speakers at an awareness seminar here on Sunday urged the people to adopt simplicity in weddings and other festivals and ceremonies to discourage unnecessary customs and excessive expenses.
Held at the Station Ground in Landikotal, they said that marriage and nikah were Sunnah and should therefore be made easier for everyone.They urged families to avoid unnecessary traditions, lavish spending and excessive demands that make marriage difficult, particularly for low-income and poor families.Awaz Committee had organised the event, which was attended by political and social activists, civil society members, religious scholars and local elders
The event was aimed at promoting simple marriages and discouraging unnecessary customs and excessive expenses associated with wedding ceremonies being practised in Pashtun society.
The speakers said that unnecessary customs had made weddings increasingly expensive, placing a financial burden on many families and discouraging young people from getting married.They stressed that families should a range wedding and Walima ceremonies according to their financial means.
They also called for Mehr or dowery to be fixed as per Islamic teachings and keeping in consideration the financial capacity of the groom’s parents and family rather than making unrealistic demands.
They urged all segments of society to play their role in promoting simplicity and eliminating wasteful traditions so that marriage remained affordable for everyone.The participants agreed that collective efforts were needed to discourage unnecessary wedding expenses and promote simple and dignified nikah ceremonies in the community.
