QUETTA: A mosque imam was shot dead by unidentified armed assailants in Raheeja Mohamdani village of Jhal Magsi district, police said on Friday.
According to police sources, the deceased was identified as Ghazi Khan, son of Muhammad Bakhsh Khosa, a resident of Qambar Shahdadkot district in Sindh. He had been serving as the prayer leader (imam) of the local mosque in Raheeja Mohamdani village for the past several months.
The attackers reportedly opened indiscriminate fire with Kalashnikov rifles, killing the imam on the spot before fleeing the scene.
Soon after the incident, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Jhal Magsi Circle, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Jhal Magsi City Police Station, and a heavy police contingent reached the area. The body was taken into police custody and shifted to the Rural Health Centre (RHC), Jhal Magsi, to complete the necessary legal formalities. Police collected evidence from the crime scene and launched an investigation into the killing. A search operation has also been initiated to trace and arrest the attackers.
Police said the motive behind the murder remains unknown, adding that the investigation is being conducted from all possible angles and that efforts are underway to bring those responsible to justice at the earliest.
