MINGORA: Residents on Friday staged a protest rally in Mingora, demanding immediate steps to restore peace in Swat amid a resurgence of militant violence in the district.
The protest, organised by the Ulasi Action Committee Swat, was held at Nishat Chowk, where participants carrying placards, banners, and white and green flags chanted slogans in support of lasting peace and against terrorism.
Addressing the gathering, speakers said the people of Swat had suffered from insecurity and terrorism for years, adding that recent incidents had once again created fear and anxiety among residents.
They urged the government to take immediate and effective measures to improve the law and order situation and launch decisive action against armed militants responsible for attacks on civilians and police personnel.
Referring to the recent suicide bombing in Kabal, the speakers said innocent people had been killed and injured, leaving the entire district in mourning. “The people of Swat cannot bear to carry more coffins,” said one of the speakers, calling on the authorities to ensure the protection of citizens’ lives and property.
The speakers recalled that Swat was once renowned across the country for its peaceful environment and tourism, but said recurring incidents of terrorism had once again cast a shadow of fear over the scenic valley. They criticised the government for relying on assurances instead of taking concrete action against militant groups operating in different parts of the district and demanded a comprehensive operation to eliminate the threat.The speakers warned that if the government failed to restore peace and curb militant activity, elected representatives from Swat should accept responsibility and resign from their offices.
