MANCHESTER: Friends United Cricket Club continued their impressive run in the Manchester Division Four Cricket League, defeating Ashton Ladysmith Cricket Club by five wickets to strengthen their promotion hopes and climb to second place in the standings.
A disciplined bowling display, led by Mohammad Abid Sohail’s superb six-wicket haul, followed by a composed batting effort ensured Friends United secured another valuable victory as the league enters its decisive stage. After electing to bat first, Ashton Ladysmith struggled against a well-organised Friends United bowling attack and were dismissed for 138 in 41.5 overs.
Sajid Saleemi top-scored with a fighting 49, while Basil George contributed 28, but the remaining batsmen failed to build meaningful partnerships. Mohammad Abid Sohail emerged as the star performer with the ball, producing a devastating spell of 6 for 23 to dismantle the opposition batting line-up. Sahil Mukhtar provided excellent support by taking two wickets, while Tanveer Mahmood and Saqib Butt claimed one wicket apiece.
Chasing a modest target of 139, Friends United paced their innings sensibly before reaching 139 for five in the 36th over. Rameez Alam anchored the successful chase with a well-compiled 43, while Qazi Waqas added 29.
Useful contributions from Aijaz Shah (25) and Saqib Butt (22) ensured there were no late setbacks as Friends United completed a comfortable victory.
