LAHORE: The Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) has welcomed the Balochistan government’s decision to launch a low-cost housing scheme for Gwadar’s fishing community, describing it as a significant step towards inclusive development and the long-term success of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
The chamber said sustainable urban planning and community welfare are critical to building investor confidence and strengthening Gwadar’s competitiveness as a regional trade gateway.It said the project reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of Gwadar’s development reach local communities directly. Under the initiative, the provincial government has begun demarcating land for the housing scheme, which is estimated to cost Rs2.44 billion. Spread across more than 200 acres near the intersection of Jiwani and Awaran Avenues, close to the Gwadar Sports Complex, the project will provide around 2,970 residential plots of 120 square yards each to eligible fishermen and their families.
PCJCCI President Nazir Hussain said the housing scheme will improve the quality of life for fishermen, strengthen social stability and create an enabling environment for sustainable economic growth. He said inclusive development is essential to transforming Gwadar into a modern international port city where local communities become active stakeholders in economic progress.
He also commended the Balochistan government for prioritising the welfare of the fishing community, which has been a key contributor to Gwadar’s economy for generations.PCJCCI Vice President Amir Ali said access to affordable housing is a vital component of socio-economic development that will improve education, healthcare and living standards for thousands of families. He added that well-planned residential communities will complement Gwadar’s expanding infrastructure, attract fresh investment and reinforce the city’s role as a regional hub for trade, logistics, fisheries and maritime services.
The chamber said the project demonstrates how infrastructure development under CPEC can generate tangible social and economic benefits. It added that improving the living conditions of fisherfolks will strengthen the fisheries sector, enhance productivity and create greater economic opportunities for local communities.
